The idea came, as many wonderful ideas do, from the Emily. We were enjoying a late night meal at ChefBURGER. I was talking about how much I love veggie burgers and how many good places there are in Kansas City for veggie-burger-lovers like me. Then we started talking about birthdays, and how my birthday was coming up. One thought led to another, and before we ate the last garlic parsley french fry, the idea for this blog was born.
When I first became a vegetarian, many years ago in Mexico, my mom used to make eggplant burgers for me and regular burgers for the rest of the family. That was before I even knew such a thing as a veggie burger existed. It was also the first time I realized that a burger without the meat could be just as much fun! Surprisingly enough, my love of veggie burgers has found a more than suitable home here in Cowtown.
I've been compiling a list of local restaurants that offer veggie burgers and putting together a calendar for this culinary adventure. A couple of the restaurants are vegan and/or vegetarian, but the majority are not -- I love finding veggie burgers hidden in the most unexpected menus! In the next 31 days, I will be visiting some of my favorite spots, but I'll also be trying new places for the first time. I'm also hoping to get recommendations from people like you.
Cheers.

This seems like a lot of fun ... and no wonder... also very clever :) Can't wait to hear all about your veggie burger adventures!
Susy
Have you tried Free State, in Lawrence? They have a good black bean burger, awesome fries AND it's a brewery...can't lose.
Great idea! We might just have to trail behind you and sample some of the veggie burgers ourselves.
Having been the one to introduce you to the original veggie burger in your life, I shall follow your 31-day-journey with keen interest, and await the verdict... will there be a best one of all? Will I win? Doubtful! But mine were good... grilled thick-sliced eggplant, fresh tomato with oregano, melted cheese and topped with onions and avocado... damned... I WAS good!

Can't wait for the first one!
Hello, everybody! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
- Elizabeth, I don't have Free State on my list yet, but I will promptly add it. Thanks for the tip!
- Deena, I'd love to have you guys join me any time!
- Mom, I'm thinking about recreating the eggplant burger for one of my 31. Stay tuned...
- Emily, the first one is today. I can't wait for it either!!!
you should try the spicy lentil burger at blanc's in westport...pretty tasty.
Thanks, Anonymous :) It's on my list already, one of my faves!
I think this is a fabulous project!! Veggie, not necessarily vegan?
I made eggplant fries yesterday. Bet they would taste pretty good with your mom's eggplant burger. But then, that might drive my eggplant-hating husband over the edge.

Have you tried the veggie burger at Ingredient in Leawood? I had it recently (it was the special of the day) and was told it would soon be added to the everyday menu. It was one of the yummiest house-made veggie burgers I've had in the KC area, complete with avocado and fresh sprouts on top.
I'm really enjoying your project and can't wait to try out a few more veggie burgers!
